What is ADHD?

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects executive functions.

These functions, including activation, working memory, impulsivity inhibition, organization, emotional management, cognitive flexibility and planning, play a crucial role in controlling our thoughts, actions and emotions.

Get the facts! ADHD is not a matter of laziness, lack of interest or lack of direction. It is not an excuse. ADHD is a disorder with real neurobiological basis that manifests from childhood.
Seven skills to learn
Bambooza offers tools to mitigate ADHD-related challenges. Every executive function affected by ADHD can be explored on the island!
It is I, Richard, the mayor of the island and your guide while you explore the different island locations.
— Richard

Activation

Activation is about the ability to get motivated in starting a task and the perseverance to see it through to the end. Motivation is essential in maintaining optimal performance. Difficulties in this area can lead to procrastination and tasks being poorly executed.
The Beach of Procrastination is where we’ll work on activation together!

We must stay motivated on the island and work hard if we want to truly enjoy the beach. However, if you procrastinate, the shores will turn into quicksand. So, my friend? Ready to activate?
— Gary

Working Memory

Working memory allows you to remember information in the short term. If this function is impaired, it is possible to experience frequent forgetfulness and have difficulty remembering the information required to perform certain tasks.
I am so very delighted to meet you! In the Library of Memory, we’ll uncover solutions together to overcome your forgetfulness.

But shhhhhhhh, you’re not the only one trying to focus here!
— Claire

Inhibition of Impulsiveness

Inhibition helps in slowing down impulses and thinking before acting. People affected by ADHD may experience difficulties in this area, which can lead to impulsive behaviour and hasty decisions.
Over here, mighty adventurer, you need to be very thoughtful! Are you ready? Suddenly, you’ll see the maze becomes more complex.

Take a step back and take time to reflect, it will be easier for you to find the exit. So? Think you can escape in record time?
— Fynn

Managing Emotions

Emotional regulation allows you to influence emotions and their intensity. People who live with ADHD may have difficulty managing their emotions, which can impact their well-being and relationships.
Did you know that the volcano reflects the emotional state of the island’s inhabitants? The snow that has settled is a sign that everything has been under control for many years.

No overflow, no eruption. This is the result of effective strategies for managing emotions! Let’s see what you can do!
— Lily

Organization

Organization involves coordinating, executing and achieving goals in a structured manner. Difficulties in this area can lead to delays, lack of follow-through with tasks, and problems with time management.
Gather 'round my Cauldron of Organization and together, we’ll simmer up some strategies to help in anticipating and decluttering your life.

There’s no time to lose, we have many mouths to feed! To the stove!
— Bill

Cognitive Flexibility

Cognitive flexibility allows you to adapt to unexpected situations and consider different options. If this skill is impaired, it’s possible to respond poorly to changes and to consider alternatives.
The Well of Adaptation is the only location with clean drinking water on the island. Even though we visit it often, it’s a new adventure every time.

Prepare your flexibility and plans B, C and D, the buckets need to be filled.
— Eva

Planning

Planning involves calculating ahead of time to achieve expected goals. Difficulties in this area can lead to poor time management, stress, plus a decrease in quality and confidence.
Your journey comes to an end at the Jungle of Lost Time! Together, we’ll carefully plan your last day so you’re prepared for your return home!

There’s a lot to do, you’d better plan carefully.
